Legendary Rowac chair

sold + tax

An office or architect’s chair, the design of which was originated by Robert Wagner's firm in Chemnitz better known as Rowac. Rowac made seating and office furniture mainly out of steel, and delivered it all over Europe.

The manufacturer’s main aims were to provide robust quality (indeed, Robert Wagner sold his furniture with a lifetime guarantee) and to make healthy seating. This chair design was one of his most famous and most successful products. In fact his uncompromisingly simple designs and their outstanding quality appealed to Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus. And in the 1920s Gropius furnished the Bauhaus workshops with Rowac products. The chair on offer here was actually produced in the late 1940s by business furnishings and metal goods factory BEMEFA, the nationalized successor to Rowac. The design is the same – merely the Rowac marking is missing.

The wooden parts have been sanded and treated with linseed oil. The steel components have been brushed and cleaned with steel wool, before treated with linseed oil. The rotating seat is height-adjustable. The backrest is flexible and can also be adjusted in height.
