This closed steel rubbish receptacle was used for the disposal of cleaning rags in industrial workshops. Probably dating back to the 1930s or 1940s, the steel is sandblasted, brushed and waxed. But why was it made out of steel? Although unthinkable nowadays, all sorts of inflammable substances were used in workshops at that time. And since cleaning rags were soaked with these dangerous liquids, they had to be disposed of somewhere safe.
