Cape Times is a shop & showroom in Berlin-Kreuzberg that we adore not only for their choice of lighting and clocks – which we were happy to supply – but also for the lively mixture of South African interior design choices it offers to its customers. Sofas and chairs, beadworks, ceramics and all kinds of other objects and accessories show the creativity of South Africa, thereby including traditional as well as modern designs. We especially like the Luna picture frames, which are handcrafted from reclaimed timber – thus setting an example in sustainability.

Designers’ Open is the three-day Festival for Design in Leipzig. German and international exhibitors present their latest works of interieur design, industrial design and fashion design. In the past six years, founders Jan Hartmann and Andreas Neubert were able to turn the Designers’ Open into the most important design forum in East and Central Germany. Each year, Designers' Open attracts more and more exhibitors as well as design fans.

Fussgaenger is one of the finest shops in Leipzig – quite possibly because of all the light fittings we've supplied! In addition to stocking shoes produced by exquisite manufacturers, bespoke footwear is made on the premises by master cobbler Peter Hartwig. Fussgaenger is located on the fascinating Feinkost site on Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse in Leipzig. www.fussgaenger.de

The German jungle is reclaiming what rightfully belongs to it. This time it was the turn of an engine shed. Once again, time proved to be the archenemy of those in search of light fittings. But the team lucked out again and managed to salvage a few dozen enamel lightshades.

7 people, 10 tonnes of electric lights and 3 days meant hard graft aplenty! Despite the cold and filth, this was one of our most pleasurable forays to an East German coal-fired power station – and we returned home with some great finds. The team also enjoyed staying in holiday camp huts, not to mention the very special schnapps reserved for miners!

With different types of salvaged lights arriving all the time, the first time a new one is dismantled is always carefully documented. Sadly, having to remove screws which have become stuck fast due to contact corrosion and other little surprises are virtually inevitable. The next step is to treat the surface of the individual components. This is done either at our own workshop or by regional specialists, and involves fine blasting, grinding polishing, galvanizing, powder-coating – in fact anything the customer desires. Afterwards, the light fitting is reassembled. The electrical components which can be substituted with new parts are replaced. However, all the electrical sections which contribute to the light's appearance are reconditioned. There's new, fascinating work to be done every day. It all boils down to a blend of documentation, research, brainteasers and craftsmanship. And d'you know what? We couldn't think of a better place to work!
